The Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) launched a new series of lunar year commemorative coins in 2008 and the Year of the Ox commemorative coins are the second collection to be released.  Adopting the standard features of this new coin series, the issuance of the Year of the Ox coins will include a 7.776 gm gold proof coin, a 31.1 g silver proof coin and a 5 oz silver proof coin.  All of the three coins bear identical design but possess different colour scheme.  For the Year of the Ox coins,  the obverse side of the coin features the pattern of the zodiac animal against a colourful flowery background and on the reverse side, the image of the world-heritage-listed historical monument--the Moorish Barracks is depicted.

This series of lunar year commemorative coins, with limited mintage and varying designs for both the obverse and reverse side for each year, is extremely unique and rare for coins of this category and is bound to become a collector’s item.

Subscriptions for the 2009 Year of the Ox commemorative coins will be accepted between December 1^st and 12^th of 2008 on a first-come-first-served basis.  Interested parties could come to the office of AMCM, Calçada do Gaio, no. 24-26, during the cited period between 9:00 to 12:30, and 14:30 to 17:00, to fill out a subscription form* and make payments for the subscribed coins.  Successful subscribers will be able to pick up their subscribed coins at AMCM between January 5^th  and 9^th  and  from January 29^th  of 2009 onwards.
